Elected Executive Officer
Alternative title: Chair, when chairing meetings
Accountable to: Society Committee and Voting Members
Main focus: Governance, fair decision-making and accountability


What you will do

You will help the Club make fair, transparent and properly recorded decisions.

You will:

  • chair Society Committee meetings

  • chair Annual General Meetings and Extraordinary General Meetings

  • chair other formal decision-making meetings

  • prepare agendas with the Secretary and relevant Officers

  • make meetings orderly, inclusive and focused

  • give members a reasonable opportunity to contribute

  • make sure decisions follow the Constitution and relevant Open SU requirements

  • make sure conflicts of interest are declared and managed

  • help Officers understand their responsibilities and authority

  • support the fair handling of complaints, role reviews and removals

  • monitor agreed governance actions

  • contribute to the Club’s annual governance report

  • act as the lead Executive Officer for a matter where the Lead Executive Officer is unavailable or conflicted

What you can decide

When chairing, you may make reasonable procedural decisions needed to run the meeting.

You must not take part in deciding a complaint, removal or other matter where you are personally involved or have a conflict of interest.

You must refer matters that may create legal, financial or contractual obligations for Open Debate CIC to the CIC Board through the correct process.
